Central Region Cities

South Dakota's Central Region is the center of the state, and a hub of activity and sights to see.  Pierre anchors the state with the State Capitol Building, and just across the river Fort Pierre showcases the state's history.  The Central Region also has many smaller towns and open spaces that showcase the life of everyday South Dakotans.

Top Central Region Cities:

Chamberlain

It may be small, but this busy city is big on exciting attractions. Among its tourist destinations are the Akta Lakota Museum, the South Dakota Hall of Fame, and the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. Learn more about Chamberlain.

Ethan

Ethan is a small community just 10 miles south of Mitchell, South Dakota that is over 125 years old. Fort Pierre

When you cross the Missouri River, the West comes alive. From Buffalo ranching at Triple U, the film site for Kevin Costner's movie Dances With Wolves, to the largest sale barn in five states – this is the frontier of Fort Pierre. Gettysburg

Gregory

Gregory is located at the junction of US Hwy 18 & 47 in south central South Dakota. Gregory is perhaps best known for its pheasant population and hunting opportunities. Learn more about Gregory.

Herreid

Herreid is located just seven miles from the North and South Dakota border in the central part of the state on US Highway 83. Learn more about Herreid.

Highmore

Highmore is a small, rural town, and the county seat of Hyde County. Centrally located just 48 miles East of Pierre, the state capital, Highmore is principally a ranching, farming, agricultural community. This central South Dakota area is also the gateway to Big Bend on the Missouri River and offers many fishing, hunting, camping and other recreational, economic development, and business opportunities.  Learn more about Highmore.

Midland

Midland can be found in Haakon County. Sixty miles west of Pierre, the state capital, at the junction of US Highways 14 and 63. In 1991, Midland was named "South Dakota a Small Community of the Year" by Governor George Mickelson. Learn more about Midland.

Mobridge

On the scenic banks of the Missouri River, Mobridge is Lake Oahe’s finest destination. Pierre

Since its incorporation as a city in 1889, Pierre has served as South Dakota’s state capital and the county seat of Hughes County. Plankinton

Plankinton is surrounded by rich farmland that attracts pheasant hunting to a prime hunting area. There are multitudes of recreational activities, from sport fishing in the Missouri River to golfing at the scenic Fish Lake County Club.  Learn more about Plankinton.

Platte

Platte is located on Highways 44 and 45, minutes from the magnificent Missouri River, Lake Francis Case, and three state parks offering fishing, boating, hiking, camping, swimming and more. Springfield
