Crane Hunting

Like the swan, the Sandhill Crane is offered as another hunting option on a limited basis. The cranes migrate through the South Dakota area in the spring and fall.

Sandhill Crane Season & Location

The sandhill crane hunting season runs through mid-September until mid-November. Hunters must use caution that they do not shoot the endangered whooping crain as they do on occasion fly with the sandhill crane.

Typically the cranes are located more towards the central part of the state.

Applying for a License

Like all small game hunting in the state you must apply for a license. To learn more about the hunting dates and licensing information please check our South Dakota Hunting License page.
