The scenic backdrop of the Black Hills makes Deadwood a popular destination for campers. Nestled in a sunken canyon in the midst of the picturesque Black Hills, Deadwood was incorporated as a city of South Dakota in 1876. Since then, it’s entertained a legendary reputation as a long-standing “Wild West” town, with the notorious natives to prove it. Infamous outlaws, including Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, prevailed over the dusty streets of Deadwood. Today, the carefully restored town is a National Historic Landmark with old-style casino hotels, historic cemeteries, and great dining and shopping.
Deadwood boasts several high-quality campgrounds with a range of amenities:
- Days of '76 RV Park and Campground: This popular site features 27 RV pull-through sites, with hookups for water and electric. Bathrooms and shower facilities are available. Tent campers are also welcome.
- Deadwood KOA Campground: Like all KOA franchises, Deadwood’s caters to families and “convenience campers” with a full-service facility, including RV hook-ups, heated swimming pool, hot tub, playground, arcade, and clean restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities. RVs and tents are welcome. A free shuttle provides campers with reliable transportation to and from the town of Deadwood.
- Elkhorn Ridge RV Park: This upscale RV park provides 373 paved RV sites, 34 cabins, and 30 tent sites. A long list of amenities are available, including Internet services, electrical hook-ups, laundry and shower facilities, a swimming pool, and hiking trails.
- Fish 'N Fry Campground: This full-service campground includes a full-service restaurant, arcade, heated swimming pool, and on-site grocery store. Accommodations include RV sites, tent sites, and cabins.
- Hay Creek Ranch: This combination horse camp/campground has sites for RVs and tents, as well as rustic cabins. Located in the heart of the Black Hills National Forest, Hay Creek is a haven for nature lovers.
- Hidden Valley Campground: This full-service campground offers tent camping, RV sites, cabins, clean showers and laundry facilities, a recreation area, and wireless Internet access.
- Mystic Hills Cabins & Campground: Located 10 miles outside of Deadwood, this picturesque campground offers 20 RV sites, 10 tent sites, and 9 cabins. During the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, 30 "cold camps" are available. Campers enjoy an on-site restaurant and store, shower and laundry facilities, lounge with Internet access and pool tables, and more.
- Seven Down Arena: Located in the town of Spearfish near Deadwood, this multi-purpose facility also offers horse boarding.
- Steel Wheel Campground & Trading Post: A popular tourist destination, this multi-service facility offers camping with full hookups, an on-site convenience store, and wireless Internet access. Shuttle services are provided to and from Deadwood.
- Whistler Gulch Campground: This modernized campground offers 100 full-service RV hook-ups, along with tent sites and cabins. Amenities include an on-site store, swimming pool, shower and laundry facilities, and trolley service to and from Deadwood.
- Whitetail Court: Campers can choose from RV sites, tent sites, or cabins. Located near Deadwood in the city of Lead.
- Wild Bill's Campground: This popular tourist attraction is equipped with an on-site bar and grill, swimming pool, shower and laundry facilities, a convenience store, and snowmobiling and ATV trails.
