The northeastern portion of South Dakota is home to more than 120 glacial lakes, originally formed 20,000 years ago when migrating glaciers moved out of the area. In southeastern South Dakota, you’ll find Sioux Falls, the state’s largest city and economic hub. Sioux Falls is home to majestic waterfalls and the 14-mile Greenway Trail. • Pierson Ranch Recreation Area: 67 campsites, a scenic walking trail, playgrounds, and recreational activities make this a prime destination for campers.

• Lake Cochrane Recreation Area: Between Lake Cochrane and Lake Oliver, this 88-acre recreation area features a small, peaceful campground ideal for those seeking a serene camping environment. Ample fishing and boating opportunities are available.
• Pelican Lake Recreation Area: A popular choice for hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts, Pelican Lake offers lakeside campsites and cabins. The main campground offers restrooms, showers, and a playground.
• Sandy Shore Recreation Area: Camp in the same area as the early homesteaders at Sandy Shore. The long, sandy beach is conducive to lakeside camping along Lake Kampeska.
