Herreid

Herreid is located just seven miles from the North and South Dakota border in the central part of the state on US Highway 83.

History

Although it was settled in the late 1800's, Herreid did not become an official town until 1901, when the Soo Line Railroad came to Campbell County. First known as "Campa", the early settlers decided the town should have a more distinguished name. Charles N. Herreid was the governor of South Dakota at the time, and it was agreed to change the name to "Herreid." In 2001, Herreid celebrated its Centennial, and thousands of people took in the 4-day event.

Recreation / Community Events

In the winter, Herreid hosts a Polka-fest, and the Rodeo Club sponsors a Pancake and Sausage Feed. Being organized by the Rodeo Club, the Pancake and Sausage Feed also entertains guests with a mechanical bull riding competition and dance.

In the fall, there is an annual rodeo over Labor Day weekend. Pumpkin Fest follows in October. Other city events include their Easter Egg Hunt and an annual Fireman's Fun Night.
