At Rushmore Cave you will find fun on every level. Rushmore Cave is the closest cave to Mount Rushmore and home of the legendary “Big” room. This room – layered with extraordinarily large number of stalactites dangling from its ceilings and walls – is one of the largest decorated cavern rooms seen on any area cave tour.

The cave tours provide a fun and educational experience like no other. It reveals the beautiful and amazing carvings formed by nature. Explore subterranean passageways that lead to spectacular stalactite rooms and discover other natural limestone cave formations. An expert guide will lead you on a one-hour journey through local history, cave geology and the many untold stories that reveal the hidden world that lies beneath us. It’s a total must-do attraction for anyone visiting the Black Hills.
The walk itself is approximately 1 hour in length. Some stooping in places with a low ceiling and the ability to climb stairs are necessary. No reservations required.
Soaring Eagle Zipline
New in 2011 is the Soaring Eagle Zipline at Rushmore Cave. The new attraction allows you to experience the sensation of flight while accelerating 700 feet down the mountainside on a suspended cable. You can even share the fun with a friend on the comfortable side-by-side seats!
The excitement doesn’t end at the bottom though – as the ride then pulls you back up the hill! Soaring Eagle is not a harness system – you will sit in a formed seat with a seat belt that then allows riders of all ages to share in the fun.
Ready for an extreme cave adventure? Try the Xpedition Adventure Tour at Rushmore Cave. You will navigate through areas off the main tour route that almost no one ever sees. Tour consists of a walking tour followed by a journey into the Rouge Room, Arrowhead Room and Bookworm Alley.
To qualify for the tour you must be able to make it through a 10″x22″ space. You can do a test at home by placing a tension rod 10″ high in a doorway and crawl under. Be prepared to get a little dirty, where some long pants, long sleeve shirt and sturdy soled shoes. Rushmore Cave will supply the caving helmets, headlamps, knee pads and elbow pads. All guests must sign a waiver. Tour lasts approximately 2 1/2 hours. The max tour is 5 guests and a trip leader. Minimum age is 14, with parent or legal guardian signing the waiver.
An excellent activity for the kids, Rushmore Cave introduced Gemstone Mining in 2011. Kids can sift through the dirt and sand to find gems, fossils, arrowheads and minerals in a live sluice box. There are pictures that the kids can match their discoveries too to learn about the particular rock formations.
