Newton Hills State Park

Newton Hills State Park offers outdoor adventurers no shortage of recreational opportunities for mountain bikers, horseback riders, and hikers. Seven miles of trails—ranging from moderately challenging to difficult—meander among the majestic bluffs and plunging gorges. Situated above the Big Sioux River, these trails afford bikers breathtaking views of the water.

A striking natural paradox, Newton Hills State Park is a visually arresting marriage of thick, dark forests and rolling, open prairies. The park is situated along the eastern boundary of South Dakota, six miles south of Canton. Part of the Coteau des Prairie geological formation, the land that makes up the park was originally formed by glaciers that slowly receded many thousands of years ago. As they slowly retreated, the glaciers shaped the original landscape to form impressive rock formations, leaving in their wake many small glacial lakes, sharp inclines, and tree-filled valleys.

Not for the faint of heart, the Newton Hills State Park biking routes consist mainly of rugged, one-track lanes with loose rocks, mud, and uneven terrain, making them suitable for more experienced bikers rather than novices. A majority of the trails are open to bikers throughout the summer, and are maintained for skiers during the winter months.
