Attractions We Recommend

You may or may not know about the attractions below, but if you don't we highly recommend them if you can fit them into your travel plans.

  • Crazy Horse Memorial - Since 1948, the Kiolkowski family has overseen the ongoing creation of the most massive sculpture in the world. After more than 50 years of steady progress, there’s still a great deal of work ahead. The end goal of this educational, non-profit project is to complete a detailed carving of Crazy Horse, one of South Dakota’s most famous Native American figures.
  • World's Only Corn Palace - Mitchell South Dakota boasts the reputation of having the "World's Only Corn Palace". Your reaction to the Corn Palace will depend partly upon your degree of appreciation for the outsize agricultural art that adorns its walls, and your knowledge of how that art is produced. But it also will depend to some extent on your appreciation for the Corn Palace’s rich history.
  • Scenic Byways - The abundance of State and National Parks, memorials, rich history, and magnificent, unspoiled scenery make South Dakota an excellent choice for travelers wishing to build lifetime memories. South Dakota’s Scenic Byways transform windshields into theatres as miles of pavement provide spectacular views of the surrounding scenery.
  • Custer State Park - Custer State Park, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is the second largest state park in America. The park’s 73,000 breathtaking acres are home to a variety of wildlife including bison, pronghorn antelope, sure-footed mountain goats, whitetail deer, mule deer, bighorn sheep, mountain lions, wild turkeys, and elk.
  • National Music Museum - The National Music Museum & Center for Study of the History of Musical Instruments, located on the University of South Dakota campus, houses outstanding collections of historic instruments, including over 14,500 American, European, and non-Western instruments.
  • Powwows - A Powwow, or Wacipi (pronounced wa-chee-pee), is a Native American celebration where a tribe gets together to dance, sing, spend time together, and honor the Native American culture.
  • Washington Pavilion of Arts and Sciences - The Washington Pavilion of Arts and Sciences in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is the perfect place to spend a day with the family. As the state's premier entertainment, cultural and educational facility, the Paviion features a Visual Arts Center, the Kirby Science Discovery Center, the Wells Fargo CineDome Theater, and the Husby Performing Arts Center.
  • Black Hills Rodeo - There's nothing more western, or more South Dakotan, than the Black Hills Stocks Show and Rodeo.  With the dramatic landscapes of Rapid City as the background, the Black Hils Stocks Show and Rodeo brings together the best examples of livestock with the thrill of a rodeo.
