This park was carved out more than 20,000 years ago by the glaciers. Through the years, these hills became the subject of many legends and were held in awe by many of the ancient Indian tribes.
The first Indian visitors named it "Sica" (she-cha) which means evil or bad. The Sioux legends recall many mysterious happenings here. Along the Trail of the Spirits, a registered National Recreation Trail, you see reddish bogs which Indians saw as the blood of their ancestors. Swamp gas and stumps glow in the dark and small waterfalls are heard echoing as trapped air escapes.
