State moves to reduce mountain lion population

State wildlife officials say there are about 250 mountain lions in South Dakota, and that’s too many. They’ve released a new five-year management plan for the animal that calls for its numbers to be reduced to 175.

That target population would be reached through hunting. South Dakota began allowing mountain lion hunting in 2005 and has had a season every year since. In the years leading up to 2005, mountain lions were increasing in number and ranging out of the Black Hills. Reports of mountain lions abounded out on the plains and prairies, and fears of attacks on animals and humans rose.

State officials responded with a hunting season that was challenged by some animal activists, but the seasons have been judged a success by many other observers.
