Restored to its original Old-West ambiance, Deadwood is a town filled with historic saloons, hotels, casinos, and museums. Incorporated in 1876, the city got its unique name from the dead trees found in the canyon that is now home to the recessed Main and Sherman Streets. Deadwood is perhaps most famous for its notoriously raucous and unlawful history, marked by the residence of such outlaws as Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane. Today, the entire city of Deadwood is registered as a historic landmark. The town’s income is fueled mainly by casino gambling, lumbering, gold mining, and tourism.
