Artesian is a small town located on Highway 34 in east central South Dakota. It is 5 miles east of the Highway 34-Highway 37 junction, 20 miles north of Interstate 90, and 90 miles northwest of Sioux Falls. The population is approximately 150.

History

Founded in 1883, the town got its’ name from the abundance of flowing wells, known as artesian wells, in this part of the state. It’s located in the heart of pheasant hunting territory in Sanborn County.

Recreation / Community Activities

The Artesian Community Improvement Association (CIA) and Letcher Summer Youth organizations have joined together to provide Little League softball and baseball to the area youth during the summer months. As a part of the Sanborn Central School, basketball is offered for grades 5-12, and volleyball, football and track are sports for grades 7-12. The Sanborn Central 21st Century Program sponsors flag football, soccer, basketball and swimming lessons, as well as hosting several summer camps. The former Artesian School was converted into the Artesian Community Center.
